Penelope (Justina Machado), a single mother and former army veteran is a Cuban-American living in the Los Angeles with her two children and mom. Many of us don’t know that ‘One Day At A Time” happens to be a remake of Norman Lear's classic 1975 sitcom of the same name.
Lydia (Rita Moreno), the most adorable and fun loving lady in her 70s is Penelope’s mother. Schneider (building manager) is adorable and immensely helpful to the family. Elena (Isabella Gomez), the daughter is a strong willed teenager who is not afraid to speak her mind. She’s a hardcore feminist too. Alex (Marcel Ruiz), the son values popularity, his appearance, and looking cool. Issues concerning gender, nationality, status et al are portrayed and dealt with sensitivity. The importance of the support of loved ones is emphasised majorly throughout the series, not compromising the humour that remains the backbone of the show.
The maternal grandmother happens to be the lifeline of the series, always energised and ravishing. Each character from the family adds essence to the theme of the series in their own special way. Parent and child relationships are dealt in the best manner possible. Many teenage problems are solved in a very smooth and convenient manner.
A must watch for parents and their offsprings together. Perfect family drama!
